Pune to Goa for a villa trip: train, flight or drive

From Pune, match the travel mode to the half of Goa. The three Pune trains on Konkan Railway's schedule, led by the daily Goa Express, all arrive at Madgaon in South Goa, so a train suits a South Goa villa. For a North Goa villa, fly into Mopa, which is about an hour from Panaji.
How should a Pune group get to a Goa villa?
Pick the mode that lands you on the same side of Goa as the villa. That rule matters more from Pune than from Mumbai, because every Pune train on Konkan Railway's current schedule arrives at Madgaon, the station for South Goa. None of them stops at Thivim, the main station for North Goa. So a group heading for a South Goa villa should look at the train first, and a group heading for North Goa should look at a flight to Mopa.
The table sets out the options. Train times come from Konkan Railway's schedule, which says its post-monsoon timetable has applied since 21 October 2026. Days and times change, so confirm on IRCTC before you book.

Which Pune train should you take?
The Goa Express, 12780, for most groups, because it is the only daily one. It leaves Pune Junction at 5.10 pm, runs south through Satara, Karad, Sangli, Miraj and Belagavi, drops down the ghats via Londa and Castle Rock, and enters Goa at Kulem, the station Gomantak Times names for Dudhsagar Falls. It reaches Madgaon at 5.40 am and ends at Vasco da Gama at 7 am.
The 22150 is the faster train on paper, 10 hours 55 minutes to Madgaon, but it runs only on Wednesdays and Sundays. It takes the other route, west to Panvel and then down the Konkan Railway line through Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi Road. The weekly 11097 leaves late on Saturday night and reaches Madgaon at 12.55 pm, which suits a group that wants to sleep on the train and check in after lunch.
For the trip home, the Goa Express, 12779, leaves Madgaon daily at 3.35 pm and reaches Pune at 4.15 am. A morning check-out leaves time for lunch before the train.
Why does the Madgaon arrival point you to South Goa?
Because Madgaon is the South Goa station, and North Goa is a long road from it. Gomantak Times calls Madgaon Junction the best option for South Goa, with taxis, rent-a-cabs and two-wheeler rentals at the station. Goa Tourism puts Madgaon about 38 km from Panaji, and North Goa villages such as Siolim and Assagao sit beyond Panaji.
A Pune group arriving by train fits South Goa villas well:
- Benaulim, a quieter beach village near Colva, is close to Madgaon.
- Cavelossim, further south on the same coast, is quieter still.
- Palolem and Agonda are in Canacona. Canacona station is nearer, but Gomantak Times notes that very few trains stop there, and none of the Pune trains above does, so plan the last leg by road from Madgaon.
If your group arrives by train but has booked in North Goa, there is a bus. Mopa airport's timetable lists departures from Margao railway station at 5.30 am, 7.30 am and 5.45 pm that run via Panaji and Mapusa to the airport. The Goa Express reaches Madgaon at 5.40 am, so the 7.30 am bus is the one to aim for. With luggage for a group, a pre-booked taxi is simpler.
Mopa or Dabolim: which airport should a Pune group fly into?
Fly into Mopa for North Goa and Dabolim for South Goa. Pune has had flights to both: Goa Tourism lists Pune among the cities with flights to Dabolim, and Business Today reported in January 2023 that IndiGo named Pune among its eight launch routes to Mopa. Schedules change each season, so check the airport code on the ticket, GOX for Mopa and GOI for Dabolim.

The PTI puts the two airports 50 km apart. A flight is the way for a Pune group to reach North Goa without a long road leg at the end: Mopa's airport buses run to Thivim station, Calangute and Panaji, and the Free Press Journal listed taxi fares of ₹1,200 to Siolim and Anjuna in January 2023. Fares have changed since, so confirm at the counter.
What if half the group flies and half takes the train?
Book the villa where the larger half arrives, and give the other half a simple connection. Two cases to plan for:
- Villa in South Goa, some flying: the flyers should book Dabolim, which Goa Tourism puts 24.4 km and 33 minutes from Margao. The train group gets off at Madgaon at 5.40 am. Both halves can reach the villa in the morning.
- Villa in North Goa, some on the train: the flyers take Mopa. The train group gets off at Madgaon and travels north by road; Mopa airport's bus from Margao railway station runs via Panaji and Mapusa, and Gomantak Times notes taxis and rent-a-cabs at Madgaon.
On the way home, the airport bus timetable lists departures from Mopa to Margao railway station via Mapusa and Panaji at 12.30 pm, 4 pm and 9.30 pm. The 12.30 pm bus is the one that fits the Goa Express, which leaves Madgaon at 3.35 pm. Allow for traffic, and do not cut it fine with a group.
Can you drive from Pune to Goa?
Yes, but this guide gives no distance or driving time. We looked for one from an official body or a newspaper and found only route-planner and travel-blog estimates, which disagree with each other, so we have left them out. Use a live maps app on the morning you leave.
One sourced warning applies to the monsoon. Drivers who enter Goa from Belagavi over the Chorla Ghat should know that The Goan reported in July 2026 that a nearly 10 km stretch of that highway is highly prone to landslides, and that blockages can close it for several hours or a whole day. The report is about the monsoon months, but check road news before you set off in any season.
A car is useful if you book a villa inland, where every beach trip is a drive. For a beach village such as Benaulim, a taxi from Madgaon and local cabs may be enough.
Where should a Pune group book a villa?
Book in South Goa if you are coming by train, and anywhere if you are flying, as long as the airport matches.
- Train to Madgaon: Benaulim, Cavelossim, or Palolem for the far south.
- Flight to Mopa: Siolim, Assagao, Moira, Anjuna or Candolim.
- Flight to Dabolim: the same South Goa villages as the train.
