What is Assagao like?

Assagao is a North Goa village of old houses, cafes and small shops, a few kilometres from Mapusa town. Gomantak Times describes tree-lined streets and colonial-era villas, and calls the village a hub for creative businesses, upscale boutiques, cafes and luxury stays. Some travel websites call it the Beverly Hills of Goa, the paper says, and the change has upset some locals.

The village church is St Cajetan's, which Gomantak Times says is over two centuries old. Assagao also has yoga retreats such as Purple Valley, which runs week-long yoga retreats, and shops that sell sustainable clothing. Most of the restaurants and shops are on the Mapusa-Anjuna road, so a car or taxi is the easiest way to get around. Assagao is a village base. It is not a beach strip.

How do you get to Assagao?

Fly into Mopa and take the train to Thivim. Manohar International Airport at Mopa is in Pernem taluka on the Goa-Maharashtra border, according to a PTI report, and Dabolim is near Vasco in South Goa, about 50 km away. When Mopa opened in January 2023, the Free Press Journal put Assagao about 20 km or a 45-minute drive away, and said taxis to Anjuna, Siolim and the Mapusa bus stand cost within ₹1,200. Fares have changed since, so confirm the rate at the counter.

Dabolim, which Goa Tourism puts 26 km from Panaji, is the longer transfer. By train, Gomantak Times recommends Thivim for Anjuna, Baga and Calangute, and most trains halt there. By bus, Mapusa is the hub: Goa Tourism notes daily buses from Panaji's KTC bus stand to Mapusa, and buses from Mapusa to Anjuna and Vagator.

When is the best time to stay in Assagao?

October to March, when the weather is cool and the sea is calm. That is Goa Tourism's season for the whole state, and it warns that the sea turns very rough with dangerous undercurrents from the run-up to the monsoon until the rains end in September. In 2025, IMD recorded the monsoon arriving over Goa on 25 May and withdrawing on 13 October, with 3,135 mm of rain from June to September, as reported by The Goan.

Assagao's prices move less with the season than the coast's. On Airbnb's Assagao table, December is the dearest month at ₹20,580 and May and July the cheapest at ₹16,258, a gap of about a fifth.

Look elsewhere if you want South Goa's quieter beaches and a short ride from Dabolim; our North Goa or South Goa guide compares the two.
