What is Moira like?
Moira is a small farming village in North Goa beside the Mapusa river. Business Today, in a 2022 piece on the village, describes coconut groves, churches among green fields, rivers, farmland and heritage Portuguese-era houses, with a relaxed, rural feel. Lohono, which runs villas here, calls it a quiet village of old Portuguese homes and narrow, tree-shaded lanes.
The village is known for its banana. The Moira or Myndoli banana is a large cooking banana with a Geographical Indication for Goa, and Gomantak Times says Moira has grown it for almost a century. You will find it at Mapusa's Friday market, where The Goan lists Moira bananas next to bimblis and red spinach.
Moira is changing. Business Today reported in 2022 that artists, designers and other newcomers were restoring old houses, and that Moira was fast emerging as a luxury property destination. In June 2026, The Goan reported a packed gram sabha voting unanimously against a government proposal to reclassify Moira and 56 other villages as urban areas. Former sarpanch Prakash Raul told the meeting the village wants to remain a village.
How do you get to Moira?
Fly into Mopa and take the train to Thivim. Manohar International Airport at Mopa is in Pernem taluka on the Goa-Maharashtra border, according to a PTI report, and Dabolim is near Vasco in South Goa, about 50 km away. Business Today put Moira about 40 minutes from Mopa and about 30 minutes from Panaji in 2022. Those times were written before the airport opened, so treat them as a guide.
When Mopa opened in January 2023, the Free Press Journal said taxis from the airport to the Mapusa bus stand cost ₹810. Moira is in Bardez taluka, and Mapusa, Bardez's old administrative centre according to The Goan, is the market town for the area. Goa Tourism notes daily buses to Mapusa from Panaji's KTC bus stand. By train, Gomantak Times recommends Thivim for North Goa's Anjuna, Baga and Calangute, and most trains halt there.

When is the best time to stay in Moira?
October to March, when the weather is cool and the sea is calm. That is Goa Tourism's season for the whole state, and it warns that the sea turns very rough with dangerous undercurrents in the run-up to the monsoon until the rains end in September. In 2025, IMD recorded the monsoon arriving over Goa on 25 May and withdrawing on 13 October, as reported by The Goan.
A village base like Moira also works in the rains for groups who plan to stay in, with a pool and a cook. Airbnb's Moira averages for August and September, ₹10,995 and ₹10,901, are the lowest of the year.
