Goa's Best Kept Secrets

Mumbai to Goa for a villa trip: flight, train or drive

Updated 7 November 2026

From Mumbai, the train suits most villa groups. The six Mumbai trains in this guide all stop at Thivim or Karmali before Madgaon, so North Goa villas are a short ride from the station. Fly into Mopa for North Goa or Dabolim for South Goa. Driving NH66 takes 12 to 13 hours.

Should a Mumbai group fly, take the train or drive to Goa?

Take the train if you can get seats together. Of the four cities in our guides, Mumbai is the one with both fast day trains and a daily overnight train down the Konkan coast, and most of them stop at Thivim, the main station for North Goa. Fly if your group is short of days or your villa is in South Goa. Drive only if you want a car in Goa for the whole trip and can give a full day to the road each way.

The table lists the options with times from Konkan Railway's own schedule, which says its post-monsoon timetable has applied since 21 October 2026. Train days and times change, so check them on IRCTC before you book.

Which Mumbai trains stop at Pernem, Thivim and Karmali?

All six trains in the table stop at least once in North Goa before Madgaon. That matters for a villa trip, because getting off at the right station can save you an hour or more in a taxi.

The Vande Bharat and Tejas are not daily on the current schedule, so a group that has fixed its dates may find the daily Jan Shatabdi or Konkan Kanya the easier booking. For the trip home, the Konkan Kanya, 20112, leaves Madgaon daily at 7 pm and reaches Mumbai CSMT at 5.40 am.

Which Goa station should you get off at for your villa?

Get off at the station closest to the villa, not at the last stop. Gomantak Times sets out which station serves which part of Goa:

Goa Tourism puts Madgaon about 38 km from Panaji, so a South Goa arrival for a North Goa villa adds a long road leg. Ask the villa which station it uses for pickups before you book tickets.

Mopa or Dabolim: which airport should a Mumbai group fly into?

Fly into Mopa for a North Goa villa and Dabolim for a South Goa villa. Goa now has two airports, and a PTI report puts them 50 km apart. Mumbai has had flights to both: Goa Tourism lists Mumbai among the cities with flights to Dabolim, and IndiGo named Mumbai among its eight launch routes when Mopa opened in January 2023, Business Today reported. Routes and timings change every season, so check the airport code on the ticket: GOX is Mopa, GOI is Dabolim.

Mopa also has airport buses run with Kadamba Transport. The airport's own timetable lists departures to Thivim railway station, Calangute, Panaji and Margao, and its taxi page lists the state's Goa Taxi app counter, GoaMiles and MegaCabs. Taxi fares have changed since January 2023, so confirm the rate at the counter.

Is driving from Mumbai to Goa worth it for a group?

Only if you need the car in Goa. The drive takes 12 to 13 hours on today's road, according to The Goan in October 2025 and Pune Now in March 2026. The Maharashtra stretch of the highway is 466 km, Pune Now reported. The target once the four-laning is complete is six hours, but the original deadline was December 2023.

That promise is not met yet. The Free Press Journal reported in December 2025 that the Panvel to Indapur section, about 84 km, is largely complete, but the 3 km Indapur bypass and the 7 km Mangaon bypass are unlikely to be ready before March 2027. The paper calls the Indapur to Zarap section, nearly 470 km, the place where the main choke points are.

A car does make sense for a villa away from the beach, such as an inland North Goa village, where you will drive to the sea every day. Split the trip with a night halfway if you have older parents or small children.

Where should a Mumbai group book a villa?

Let the arrival point decide the area. For most Mumbai groups that points north.

Still deciding between the two halves? Read North Goa or South Goa for a villa holiday. For a big group, see group villas in Goa, and check what a Goa villa costs a night before you compare quotes.
