What are Anjuna and Vagator like?

Anjuna and Vagator are two beach villages side by side on the North Goa coast. Goa Tourism describes Anjuna as a village of about five square miles between the Arabian Sea and a hill, with palm trees, soft sand and a rocky point of black rock running into the sea. It became famous with the flower power generation of the sixties and later for trance parties.

Vagator is the next bay along. Goa Tourism calls it one of the most photographed beaches in Goa: a crescent of sand on Caisua bay, in the Chapora river basin, under Chapora Fort. It adjoins Anjuna but feels secluded, and in season it is a favourite venue for midnight parties.

The two villages share one stretch of coast, so a villa in either puts both beaches, the flea market and the fort within easy reach.

How do you get to Anjuna and Vagator?

Fly into Mopa and take the train to Thivim. Manohar International Airport at Mopa is in Pernem taluka on the Goa-Maharashtra border, according to a PTI report, and Dabolim is near Vasco in South Goa, about 50 km away. When Mopa opened in January 2023, the Free Press Journal listed a taxi to Anjuna at ₹1,200. Fares have changed since, so confirm the rate at the counter.

By train, Gomantak Times recommends Thivim for Anjuna, Baga and Calangute, and most trains halt there. By bus, Goa Tourism says buses run to Vagator from Mapusa and from Calangute, and Mapusa has the nearest interstate bus station.
