Where to stay in South Goa: Colva, Benaulim, Majorda, Varca or Palolem

Updated 8 November 2026 by Ketan, Colva

For a first South Goa villa stay, base yourself on the Salcete beach belt between Majorda and Cavelossim. Colva is the busiest village with the most shops and restaurants, Benaulim is quieter and less than 2 km south, and Varca and Cavelossim are calmer still. Palolem and Agonda are 40 km beyond Margao and suit a slower trip.

Which part of South Goa should you stay in?

Most South Goa villa stays sit on one long stretch of sand in Salcete taluka. Goa Tourism describes it running north to south: Velsao, Arossim, Utorda, Majorda and Betalbatim, then Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim and Mobor. Goa Tourism says the stretch of developed beaches ends at the Cabo de Rama headland. Beyond it, in Canacona, come Agonda, Palolem, Patnem and Galgibaga.

Pick the Salcete belt if you want short transfers from Dabolim and Madgaon and restaurants within a short drive. Pick Canacona if you want a smaller, slower beach village and do not mind a longer drive in.

Is Colva a good place to stay?

Colva is a good base if you want the most going on in South Goa. Goa Tourism calls it the most important beach in the South circuit, with air-conditioned resorts, cottages, eateries, stalls and guest houses that have expanded the village enormously. The road from the church to the beach is where the facilities are.

The village has a long fishing tradition too. Goa Tourism describes mackerel drying on the sand and trawlers lined up offshore, and the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, known for its statue of Menino Jesus. Colva is 39 km from Panaji, and Goa Tourism says the Panaji to Margao drive alone takes about an hour depending on traffic.

Colva is less suited to a group that wants an empty beach at the door. For that, look a little north or south.

Colva or Benaulim: which is better?

Benaulim is quieter; Colva is busier and has more within walking distance. The two are less than 2 km apart, so a villa in either can use the other's beach and restaurants.

Goa Tourism calls Benaulim more tranquil than Colva and still rather undiscovered by domestic tourists. It also notes that Benaulim gets fairly crowded in the evenings and at weekends, when local visitors arrive by bus. Benaulim is known for rosewood furniture and for its Sao Joao celebrations in June. Our Benaulim area guide has more on the village.

On Airbnb's averages the two cost about the same: Benaulim ₹10,807 a night in December against ₹11,089 for Colva.

What about Majorda and the beaches north of Colva?

The stretch north of Colva is the pick for a group that wants a long, calm beach and a short airport run. Goa Tourism describes the 10 km from Betalbatim north through Majorda, Utorda, Arossim and Velsao as white sand that is not very crowded. Majorda, about 5 km north of Colva, is the village Goa Tourism credits with Goa's best bakers.

It is also the priciest part of this belt on Airbnb's figures. Majorda's December average was ₹14,378 a night, the highest of the South Goa villages we checked.

Are Varca, Cavelossim and Mobor good for families?

Yes, for families who want quiet. Goa Tourism calls Varca, Cavelossim and Mobor cleaner and quieter than most of Goa's better known beaches, and home to some of the state's most exclusive resorts. There are shacks serving Goan food and seafood, and dolphin-watching trips go up the River Sal.

The trade-off is distance. Goa Tourism puts Cavelossim 18 km from Margao and 41 to 48 km from Dabolim airport. Our Cavelossim area guide covers the village in detail.

Should you stay in Palolem or Agonda instead?

Only if a slow, small beach village is the point of the trip. Goa Tourism puts Palolem 40 km from Margao and more than 70 km from Panaji, and 3 km from Canacona railway station. Gomantak Times notes very few trains stop at Canacona and suggests Madgaon instead. Agonda is a 3 km cove with very few facilities; Goa Tourism warns it is not safe to swim out far there.

Further south, Goa Tourism calls Patnem one of the quietest beaches in South Goa, and lists Galgibaga, 54 km from Margao, as one of three Olive Ridley turtle nesting beaches in Goa. Read the Palolem and Agonda guides before you book that far south.

How do you get to a South Goa villa?

Fly into Dabolim or take the train to Madgaon Junction. Goa Tourism names Dabolim the closest airport for South Goa and puts it 24.4 km, about 33 minutes, from Margao. Bogmalo beach is just 4 km from the airport. Mopa, Goa's newer airport, is in the far north, so a South Goa group should check the airport code on the ticket.

From Margao, Goa Tourism says local buses run to almost all the major villages, motorbike pilots are cheap, and Goa Miles cabs can be booked on the app. For train times from your city, see the Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi guides.

What is there to do near Colva and Benaulim?

Beyond the beach, the Salcete villages inland are the draw. Goa Tourism suggests drives to Chandor, Goa's oldest capital, about 20 minutes from Margao; Loutolim, the village that inspired the cartoonist Mario Miranda, with the Ancestral Goa museum; and Rachol, with its seminary. In the monsoon, it recommends Rivona further inland, with springs and the Pandava caves.

Goa Tourism also lists South Goa feasts worth timing a trip around: the Feast of the Three Kings in Cansaulim on 6 January, and the Feast of the Holy Spirit in Margao at the end of May, with its Purumetachem fair.

Is South Goa the right choice for your group?

South Goa suits families, older parents and groups who want a calm villa holiday. Goa Tourism describes the south as quieter village life after the busy north. If your group wants clubs and late nights, read North Goa or South Goa for a villa holiday first. Travelling between June and September? Read Goa in the monsoon.
