Goa in the monsoon: what a villa stay is like from June to September
Updated 8 November 2026 by Ketan, Colva
Goa's monsoon runs from early June to late September, and IMD says July brings a third of the year's rain. The sea is closed: Drishti Marine prohibits swimming and coastal water sports for the season. A villa trip still works for rain, waterfalls and feasts, and Airbnb's South Goa villa average is lowest in June and July.
When is the monsoon in Goa?
The monsoon in Goa runs from June to September. IMD's Climate of Goa, the department's long-term summary for the state, says the southwest monsoon sets in by about the first week of June and withdraws by about the third week of September. October to December is a transition back to dry weather.
Real years drift either side of those dates. In 2025 the monsoon reached Goa on 25 May and IMD declared its withdrawal on 13 October, The Goan reported. In 2026 it reached Kerala on 4 June and Goa the next day, according to the same paper. Plan around the season, not a fixed day.
The table gives IMD's normal rainfall for each district, based on 1961 to 2010 data. A rainy day is a day with 2.5 mm of rain or more.
| Month | South Goa rain (mm) | South Goa rainy days | North Goa rain (mm) | North Goa rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | 92.2 | 3.1 | 70.4 | 3.2 |
| June | 888.8 | 21.9 | 928.1 | 21.8 |
| July | 1,128.0 | 27.1 | 1,108.9 | 27.5 |
| August | 709.5 | 24.7 | 706.0 | 25.0 |
| September | 340.0 | 14.8 | 315.1 | 14.3 |
| October | 171.6 | 7.9 | 160.0 | 7.1 |
| November | 38.5 | 2.0 | 39.7 | 2.4 |
| Whole year | 3,394.2 | 102.8 | 3,347.1 | 102.3 |

Which monsoon month is best for a villa trip?
September, for most groups. Goa Tourism's own monsoon page advises skipping the heavy showers of July and August and calls September an ideal time to drive around. IMD's numbers back that up: September has about half the rainy days of July.
June suits people who want the first rains and the Sao Joao feast on 24 June. July is the wettest month, with rain on about 27 days out of 31 in IMD's normals, so pick it only if staying in is the point of the trip. August still has rain on about 25 days, but ends with the Bonderam festival on Divar island.
Can you go to the beach in Goa during the monsoon?
You can walk on the beach, but you cannot go into the sea. In an advisory issued on 12 June 2026, Drishti Marine, the state-appointed lifesaving agency, said swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited during the monsoon season, PTI reported. Red flags are placed along the beaches.
Drishti said more than 450 lifesavers and beach marshals were deployed across 54 beaches, 30 of them in South Goa and 24 in North Goa. It also stationed lifesavers at Mayem Lake, Dudhsagar Waterfalls, Savri Waterfall and Mhovacho Guno. Its chief executive warned that strong currents and tall waves make even shallow water unsafe.
River water sports are also off for now. On 3 August 2026 the High Court of Bombay at Goa ordered the immediate suspension of all inland water sports by riverine craft, after the state admitted it had never notified the operating zones its monsoon policy required, The Goan reported. That came days after the government withdrew its 2023 notification that had allowed monsoon water sports on inland waterways.
What can you do in Goa in the monsoon?
The monsoon is a season for the hinterland, food and village feasts rather than the sea. Goa Tourism lists these:
- Waterfalls and forest walks: Goa Tourism says waterfalls that run dry in summer fill up, and treks are common in the season. Follow the lifesavers' instructions at falls such as Dudhsagar and Savri.
- Rivona in South Goa: Goa Tourism says Rivona, inland in the south, is best visited in the monsoon, with springs running and the old Pandava caves nearby.
- Village drives in Salcete: Goa Tourism suggests drives through Chandor, Loutolim and Rachol, all near Margao, past old Indo-Portuguese homes. These suit a South Goa villa in Benaulim or Cavelossim.
- Sao Joao, 24 June: the feast of St John the Baptist, when young men jump into village wells. Goa Tourism names Siolim the centre of the festival, with a boat parade on the river, and notes Benaulim celebrates it too.
- Bonderam, August: a flag and float festival on Divar island. Goa Tourism says the main day is in the last week of August, and the Malar ward starts its celebrations a week before.
Are Goa villas cheaper in the monsoon?
Yes, in most areas, and the drop is bigger in South Goa than in the north. Airbnb publishes an average villa price for each month on its area pages. We read these on 8 November 2026. They are averages across every villa size listed, so a large pool villa for a group will cost more than the figure shown.
| Area (Airbnb villa page) | June | July | September | December |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colva | ₹6,390 | ₹6,108 | ₹7,236 | ₹11,089 |
| Benaulim | ₹6,484 | ₹6,672 | ₹7,518 | ₹10,807 |
| Varca | ₹5,920 | ₹5,826 | ₹6,390 | ₹11,277 |
| Majorda | ₹7,236 | ₹7,236 | ₹7,894 | ₹14,378 |
| South Goa (all) | ₹6,766 | ₹6,766 | ₹10,807 | ₹11,747 |
| North Goa (all) | ₹14,660 | ₹14,096 | ₹14,754 | ₹18,701 |
South Goa as a whole shows a jump in August (₹11,465) and September before falling again in October (₹8,270), so compare your exact dates rather than assuming the whole season is cheap. For how villa prices work through the year, read what a Goa villa costs per night.
What should you check before booking a villa in the monsoon?
Ask the questions that matter only when it rains hard. When the 2026 monsoon arrived, IMD Goa warned of waterlogging on roads, local cuts to power and water supply, and weak trees falling in strong wind, The Goan reported. With that in mind, ask the villa:
- Is there power backup, and what does it run: lights and fans only, or the air conditioning and the pump too?
- Does the access road flood after heavy rain, and is there a second way in?
- Is the pool open and cleaned through the season?
- Is there covered space to sit outside, so the group is not shut indoors for days?
- What is the cancellation policy if a red alert or a rail cut stops you travelling?

How do you get to Goa in the monsoon?
All the usual routes run, but allow extra time. Konkan Railway's monsoon timetable applied from 15 June to 20 October 2026, with speed restrictions across the route, and its loco pilots are told to stop trains if water rises more than 100 mm above the rails. The railway gives live running status on its website and on helpline 139.
By road, read the news on the ghat routes before you leave; the Bengaluru to Goa guide covers the Chorla Ghat. For train and flight options from Maharashtra, see the Mumbai and Pune guides.
North Goa or South Goa in the monsoon?
IMD's normals show almost no difference in rain: 3,394 mm a year for South Goa against 3,347 mm for North Goa. The choice comes down to price and what you want nearby. The Airbnb averages above show South Goa villas cost far less than North Goa ones in June and July. North Goa has Siolim's Sao Joao and the busier villages; South Goa has the Salcete village drives and Rivona.
